A good response to the recent email about US editions with a large proportion sold but still a few left. This time the focus is on JB’s non-fiction works. In my view these are hugely under-read because of the high profile of his novels. But, as I have probably remarked before, a good writer is a good writer and many of his non-fiction works are good reads in themselves. His biographies are generally thorough and he brings out the character of his subject well – Cromwell and Scott are prime examples of this – and some of his shorter ‘memoirs’ are also worth reading. His writing about the war is, I believe, always sensitive and sympathetic without ever becoming maudlin.
The attached list is entirely of his non-fiction writing, almost exclusively first editions and, most noteworthy of all, nearly all have a dustwrapper, a good number of them very rare.
